USS Missouri, Pearl Harbor FAM w/Polynesian Adventure Tours

Thursday, November 20, 2008 I had the privilege of going on a FAM tour with agents from various activity stations on Maui. This is a guided land tour with Polynesian Adventure Tours #A2.

The USS Missouri/ Pearl Harbor Tour was definitley an eye opener for me. At an early age I remember going on a school excursion with my 5th grade class and found that the most exciting part of that trip at that time was the bus ride over and lunch. I'm ashamed to say that as a native to the Island of Oahu, I never fully realized the impact it has had on many family's then, even till today 67 years later.

I had no idea what actually took place that sad day until taking this tour with Polynesian Adventure Tours, with Maui Sales Manager , Barry Kim and Oahu, Sales & Promotion Manager, Sara Matsuura. Finally I got an insight of that fate day December 7, 1941 when Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Japanese army.

The sunrise in the east was magnificent above the white clouds as I led 360 planes towards Hawaii at an altitude of 3,000 meters. I knew my objective: to surprise and cripple the American naval force in the Pacific. But I fretted about being thwarted should some of the U.S. battleships not be there. I gave no thought of the possibility of this attack breaking open a moral confrontation with the United States. I was only concerned about making a military success.
As we neared the Hawaiian Islands that bright Sunday morning, I made a preliminary check of the harbor, nearby Hickam Field, and the other installations surrounding Honolulu. Viewing the entire American Pacific Fleet peacefully at anchor in the inlet below, I smiled as I reached for the mike and ordered, "All squadrons, plunge in to attack!" The time was 7:49 a.m.

Like a hurricane out of nowhere, my torpedo planes, dive-bombers, and fighters struck suddenly with indescribable fury. As smoke began to billow and the proud battleships, one by one started tilting, my heart was almost ablaze with joy. During the next three hours I directly commanded the fifty level bombers as they pelted not only Pearl Harbor, but the airfields, barracks, and dry docks nearby. Then I circled at a higher altitude to accurately assess the damage and report it to my superiors.

Just being aboard the Battle Ship USS Missouri (B-63) was really a humble experience.

Hi Tish,
I'm so happy you enjoyed the tour. I too was very touched by the A2 tour when I first took it when I was hired by PolyAd two years ago. Growing up in Honolulu, I also never uderstood or appreciated the full significance of Pearl Harbor until I took the tour. Everytime I take the tour, I learn something more. Ed, or driver/guide was excellent and so insightful. Sam, our great tour guide on the Missouri let us off easy because of time constraints. If he had time to do his normal tour, I assure you, he would have had all of us in tears, as he did with the group I took last year. It was great having you along. Everyone that went seemed to really get a lot out of it. Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for the letter. I will be seeing you soon.
Warmest Aloha,
Barry Kim Maui Sales Manager

Karina & good friend Anette visiting from Denmark. All "Wide Eye" and ready to explore the Hawaiian way of living. We got into a pretty intense conversation, comparing notes on how different the rules of the land were here compared to back home in Denmark. Working at the Snorkel Shop is surely becoming a "One Stop Shop" not just for renting snorkel gear or booking activities. It's a becoming a place for meeting wonderful people from all over the world. Two beautiful kind hearted young ladies stopping by the Snorkel Shop to pick up couple boogie boards for the day. We exchanged emails and will be sending each other pictures taken while here at Auntie Snorkel.

Cousins from England visiting Auntie Snorkel the day before going on a 3 day visit to Big Island, Hawaii. Both traveling buddies couldn't wait to explore the Big Islands beauty and were looking forward to doing the Big Island Spectacular tour with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter. Selvin , and his traveling cousin Lennox has been all over the world site seeing and say they are loving every minute of it. It was a pleasure meeting these guys and I hope to see them again soon.

Husband & wife Juergen & Karin visiting Maui for the first time from Germany. From the time they walked in we both looked at each other realizing that this might take a while because of a slight problem of not speaking or understanding each others language. I'm part Italian so I thought if I use extra hand gesturing that might help. But it didn't, finally we were able to overcome the language barrier by using their handy German to English translation book. Not really knowing their way around the island and wanting to see some special highlights I set them up with Polynesian Adventure Tours on the Haleakala/ Iao/ Central tour. They were very open to the fact that the tour included pick up service. The following day both Juergen & Karin walked in with two thumbs up nodding their heads saying "Yes, Yes Was Good".

Dave & wife had the time of their lives while on Maui. They enjoyed snorkeling with Maui Classic Charters for the first time, taking a romantic dinner cruise with the Pacific Whale Foundation & absolutely enjoyed the evening at the Tihati-Maui Sunset Luau. Here they are saying good-bye with their faces lit up with happiness.
Dave & wife; California

Thomas & Ann , finally getting to meet Tish at Auntie Snorkel for the first time after 3-5 weeks of communicating via email & phone setting up their 7 days of activities for the Hawaiian Island boat cruise to; ( Maui, Hilo, Kona, Kauai and Oahu). Tish had the opportunity to utilize the new Shore Excursion program set up by Roberts Hawaii specifically put together to cater to the sensitivity of the arrival and departure times of The Pride of America .

My Hawaii Experience........

Growing up and living in Hawaii is my life. I can't imagine living any where else in the world. I love everything about it. The beauty of the beaches, the lush green vegetation of the island, the endless scenery, and the mix cultural of people from all over the world. Each Island offers it's own uniqueness which makes "Hawaii" special.

Have you had a chance to visit one of the "Beautiful Islands of Hawaii" recently? (Maui, Molokai, Lanai, Kauai, or Big Island-Hawaii.) Tell us about it! Share your likes and dislikes. Did you get a chance to participate in any of the fun activities or tours available while visiting? (luaus, snorkeling, surfing, hiking, kayaking, sunset/dinner cruises, diving, etc...) Tell us about it!! We'd love to get your feed back. : )
